b. 1985, North‑West UK · Lives and works in Manchester, UK
My paintings are populated by things that are almost themselves — objects and figures slightly displaced from the actual, believably solid yet held at one remove: models, replicas, synthetic or speculative versions of familiar forms. Figures occupy space as though mid-thought, present but unreachable, existing only within the frame.
The objects I return to are chosen as carriers: forms that suggest propagation, amplification, diffusion, the movement of something through space or between states. Arranged in combinations, they generate meanings I couldn't have arrived at alone, a vocabulary that shifts with each new pairing. Nothing is purely symbolic, nothing purely formal. Things sit in relation, quietly charged.
There is a stillness in the work that I think of as anticipatory, the held moment between a question and its answer. What interests me is the texture of transformation rather than its drama: the way something altered remains seductive, the way a copy can feel more vivid than its origin, the way the synthetic and the imagined carry a reality of their own.
